The nuclear radiation detected in some parts of Europe that were earlier supposed to be coming from Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (Kanupp), might have emitted from Hungry, according to the information received by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) from the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (HAEA). Well-placed sources told Business Recorder here on Thursday that higher than the normal level of radiations were recorded in Poland, Czech Republic and Ukraine. Earlier, it was being assumed that the release of iodine-131 to these countries might be the result of radiations from Kanupp. Kanupp was closed down on October 5 for maintenance but one of the channels that used to carry heavy water for cooling had to be opened as the temperature was increasing because of less flow of water. When the pump was put into operation again after the maintenance, the heavy water started leaking. Following which emergency was declared in the plant on October 19, the sources added. Sources said that according to Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (HAEA), the source of the iodine-131 (I-131) detected in Europe might be the result of release of radiations to the atmosphere from the Institute of Isotopes Ltd, Budapest. The Institute of Isotopes Ltd produces radioisotopes for healthcare, research and industrial applications. According to the HAEA, the release of the I-131 remained from September 8 to November 16, 2011while the cause of the release is under investigation. The recent information available on IAEA website reveals that the levels of I-131 that have been detected in Europe are extremely low. There is no health concern to the population. Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) has already cleared the position of Pakistan regarding the emission of nuclear radiations, saying that the release of Iodine-131 is not possible unless there is a nuclear fuel failure, while the incident at Kanupp involved leakage of heavy water, which contains tritium and not Iodine-131.
