Military scientists sprayed radioactive plumes across miles of English towns and villages into the outskirts of London in a series of secret trials, it emerged. The trials were conducted by government scientists as they sought to develop defences against biological weapons. The radioactive gas had been mixed with a simulant chemical to mimic the effect of germ warfare clouds.
