Rains in Karachi on Tuesday left seven people dead and several injured, while the entire power generation and distribution system of the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) collapsed, plunging almost 85 percent of the city into darkness.
The heavy downpour led to tripping of major feeders supplying electricity to the city.
A Karachi Electric Supply Corporation officer explained that a thick layer of dust on the units mixed with the rain and hardened, acting as something akin to a conductor. As a result, the Bin Qasim Thermal Power Station units tripped, leading to the same result in a domino effect for units at the Korangi Thermal Power Station, SITE gas turbine, DPL, Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (KANUPP). KANUPP will take another 36 hours to resume supply of electricity.
Later on Tuesday evening, Geo News reported that the Sindh government had deployed Rangers in the city to control traffic jams.
The channel reported that both rain and electricity failure had caused traffic jams on various roads of the city, and Rangers were called to control the situation.
The channel reported that officials had also set up a relief centre in the Rangers headquarters to provide assistance to the rain-stricken citizens. staff report/daily times monitor
