Rains play havoc with life, property in J&K: Man dies in flash floods, NH1A partially blocked

JAMMU, Aug 22: A villager was today washed away in flash floods triggered by heavy rains in Rajouri district while traffic on 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was resumed today after remaining suspended for more than 6 hours due to landslides triggered by heavy rains. 50-year-old Anwar Hussain was swept away by the flash floods in Patrara area of the district, police said, adding that his body was later recovered from the nallah. Seven other persons were rescued from the deluge in Samba, Kathua and Jammu districts of the state, police added. Four houses also collapsed in Kathua district's Bilawar belt today in which two persons were injured. Two more houses collapsed in Reasi district's Mahore belt, but no one was injured, they added. Due to lightening in Manajkote areas, 40 houses got partially damaged. The flash floods also washed way some temporary property of migrants, camped on the bank of Manjakote river. A traffic police official said landslides in Ramban area forced authorities to suspend the traffic early this morning. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, immediately pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to put through the highway. He said the highway was put through at 11.30 AM after the landslides were cleared on the road. Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers, have been allowed to move towards their respective destinations. Over 500 vehicles were stranded around Ramban area, 160 km from here, said a traffic police officer. Many passengers were also stuck on the 300-km highway. Thousands of vehicles remain stranded from both sides from Ramban to Batote and Ramsu to Maroog as many land slides stuck on it due to heavy rain at five different places due to heavy rain late last night about 3 AM. "We are trying to clear the landslides but shooting stones and continuing slides are impeding the clearing process," a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) official said. DySP Ramban Faisel Qureshi said that traffic was stopped at 5:30 AM due multiple landslides at National Highway. Landslides struck at five different places at national highway. After land slides traffic cops stop vehicles at Ramban, Batote and Ramsu so that when road be green for vehicular traffic to reduce jamming. The road was cleared for two way at 12 noon. BEACON authorities and traffic cops reached slide places at 5:50 AM and then BECON started work to remove landslides from NH1A. Shooting stones struck at Painthal 171 km, land slide near Maroog 163 km, Sari 151 km and at km 152 Ramban. The road was green for traffic at 12 noon, he added. Due to closure of national highway heavy traffic jamming was witnessed besides hard work of traffic cops. Besides the highway, many other mountainous roads in Jammu region are closed due to landslides - disrupting connectivity with major townships.
