Turning to rainwater harvesting option for drinking purpose has come as a boon for several girls in Nepal villages, particularly those who in the absence of government water supply have to travel several distance from their house to fetch water from river or lake for potable needs. Representatives from Plan Nepal, an non-government organisation working for community development in the country, who were in the capital to participate 12th International Rainwater Catchments System Conference 2005 told that by making water available at the doorstep of every village through rainwater harvesting, many girls are now utilising that time to attend school. Mr Mohan Srivastava, member of Plan Nepal said, "Our country may boast of ample water resources but only 67 per cent of population have access to drinking water. The village women and children spend half their lives collecting water."
