Raised flood shelter for Chirang villagers

North East India Committee on Relief and Development (NEICORD), an organisation working for relief and development in the north eastern region, recently inaugurated a raised flood shelter on the July 10 constructed for the community of Daokabaha village in Chirang district. NEICORD has been working in this district for the last two and half years focusing on disaster risk reduction at the grass root level.
Based on working with the communities in regard to disaster risk reduction, a study was done to understand their vulnerabilities in which it was found ideal to have a flood shelter as an evacuation centre for the communities as every year the people of this area face the onslaught of flood. These communities are capacitated and trained to prepare and response and evacuate in time when a natural disaster occurs.
In the inauguration programme, the executive secretary of Goalpara Boro Baptist Church Association (GBBCA) Dhojen Borgoary stressed that there is a need for cooperation for any successful venture. He referred to the awareness brought during last year's flood in Chirang district by the ABSU informing people from village to village about the rising waters of the Aie River. He thanked NEICORD for the programme on risk reduction and also for the help and the shelter which will be a great help for the people during flood.
The chief guest Primal Narzary, the ABSU president of the Nishima Anchalik Committee said that the shelter is a social property and the people should take care of it and advised the disaster management committee of the village to maintain it properly. He also stressed on unity for any kind of development. He emphasised that the raised flood shelter is needed during crisis time especially during flood, cyclone.
He also asked people of the area to construct houses which are raised so that they can combat flood to some extent and reduce the affect of flood. He advised the people on quality education saying that education starts at home and then comes to school set up and for a village to be developed one has to be educated with new ideas and thoughts. Lastly, he encouraged the people to take opportunity and attend training on disaster management and other related trainings.
The VCDC members Roshen Mosahary and Chwarkwsan Basumatary of Patabari area also attended the programme and appreciated the effort towards reduction of risks in the area.
General secretary of ABSU (Nishima Anchalik Committee) Ramen Narzary, Daobo Champramary, an influential leader, some teachers and local leaders of Patabari area, also attended the programme. This was stated in a press release.
