The Rajasthan government will constitute a committee to study the possible adverse impact on human health by the use of computer-generated slips and ATM slips. Responding to a question in the Assembly here on Monday, Health Minister Rajendra Rathore said the committee, chaired by a senior professor of S.M.S Hospital, will make an in depth study of the health impact of the computer-generated slips and ATM slips which are said to carry cancer-causing chemicals. The Minister said while there has been no concrete scientific evidence to show that computer-generated slips coated with Bisphenol-A (BPA) and Bisphenol –B (BPS) caused cancer, any decision on the demand to ban it, would be taken only after the committee submits its report. A ban right now would have adverse impact, he said. According to Mr Rathore, as many as 91 research papers have been published so far on the impact of Bisphenol on human health, of which 53 were published this year itself. One research paper by Praveen Watke of Aurangabad-based Dr Ambedkar Marathwada University had found that Bisphenol-coated paper used in thermal printers could percolate into human beings through the skin resulting in adverse health impact. America, France, Canada and Sweden have banned the use of thermal paper in ATMs. Replying to the question on whether the government would consider a ban on the use of computer generated slips and ATM slips as they had an adverse impact on human health, raised by Rao Rajendra Singh the Health Minister said since there was no concrete evidence to prove that the chemicals used in thermal paper was carcinogenic, a ban would not be possible at this moment but if the committee found evidence, action could be contemplated.
