DH News Service, Bangalore: Thursday morning, Selvi, a resident of II Cross Gayatri Nagar, Rajajinagar, had a new guest on the terrace of her house: A three feet monitor lizard with its two front legs tied, lying in a corner. Shocked seeing a new creature, Selvi came down running and alerted her family members and neighbours. Within minutes, passerby and neighbours thronged the building for a glimpse of the reptile. "Around 9 am, I went up to the second floor terrace to dry clothes and was shocked to see a huge reptile. I didn't even give it a second look, I ran down the stairs and informed everybody,' Selvi told Deccan Herald. One of her tenants alerted the BBMP control room. A few hours later, a team led by Sharath Babu, environmental advisor, arrived and rescued the reptile. Sharath said, of late, monitor lizard (uda) had emerged a delicacy at select eateries. Uda trade is on the rise and recently, a few dhabas were raided and umpteen lizards were rescued. Monitor lizards are also much sought after for their blood, skin, oil and meat. Blood for virility It is believed that the monitor lizard's blood is consumed for virility, its meat for stronger limbs and joints and the skin for patchwork of certain musical instruments. "Since its front limbs were tied, we feel it was brought for trading and by chance it has slipped out and taken a different route. A huge tree's branches were protruding into Selvi's house terrace and the lizard might have dropped from one of the branches,' added Sharath.
