Mumbai, July 16 With the organised efforts of the city's Tree Authority, several rare trees in the city are set to get nameplates. These trees will get a bright green metal plates identifying them by their common and scientific names, in English as well as Marathi. Dr Nilesh Baxi, a member of the city's Tree Authority said, "It was a proposal discussed and passed in a meeting a few weeks ago. A number of trees in the city as well as the suburbs are rare and need to be preserved. However, their value has so far gone unnoticed. By naming them, we will not just sensitize citizens to the importance of those trees but also kindle their interest in the city's varied flora.' Baxi stressed on the floral variety of the city, including a plethora of ornamental, fruiting, flowering and medical plants and highlighted the significance of preserving rare trees. "There are valuable trees like the neem which have medicinal properties, as well as really rare trees. However, since they have not been named or documented, the trees are often not noticed or cared for by the people. If people realise the value of a tree standing in their locality, they will take responsibility to conserve it,' he said. Municipal Commissioner Jairaj Phatak said: "The plan was discussed in our meeting a few months ago, and since it is a good and inexpensive idea, we have decided to adopt it. The garden department will now work out the details and implement the plan.' According to V S Dande, Superintendent of Gardens, their department has already made sample nameplates. "We will start implementing the plan after the monsoon season ends,' he said.
