Space Shuttle Columnbia's astronauts began killing and dissecting rats yesterday to see how the animals' brains changed after a day of weightlessness. Four white adult rats were targeted for quick dissection. Each was launched on Friday with temperature and heart rate sensors embedded in their heads. Scientists say that the only way to know precisely how the nervous system adapts and develops without gravity is to remove and preserve body parts in orbit.
