Ravindran to head reconstituted urban arts commission

The Delhi Urban Arts Commission was reconstituted on Friday, ending a long tug-of-war between the city government and the heritage watchdog. The urban development ministry notified the new panel which has K T Ravindran as the chairperson and Mohammad Shaheer, Nayanjot Lahiri and Ratish Nanda as its members, putting an end to speculation about the reconstitution of powerful commission, which approves all projects in the Capital keeping in view the aesthetic and environmental designs. K T Ravindran is professor of Urban Design at the School of Planning and Architecture while Mohammad Shaheer, who was in the last commission, is a famous landscape expert. Nayanjot Lahiri is a historian from Delhi University and Ratish Nanda is conservation architect working for the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. The newly constituted panel has a tough task ahead with a large number of projects connected with the Commonwealth Games-2010 piling up. The reconstituted panel will be under pressure from the city government to hasten the pace of clearance of these projects since only two years are left for the Games.
