A red alert has been sounded in Jammu and Kashmir following devastating forest fires, which have been raging for about a month, causing extensive damage to the forest wealth. The fires have apparently been caused by a long dry spell in the state, which is something very rare. There has been no rainfall in the Valley for seven months and the winter has also gone dry so far with no snowfall.
