The Opposition parties on Tuesday asked the the state government to keep the Rs 10,000-crore Hyderabad Metro Rail Project in abeyance for six months. Mr P.L. Srinivas of the Telugu Desam, Mr Bandaru Dattatreya of the BJP, Mr Ramulu Naik of the TRS, Mr Y. Venkateswara Rao of the CPI(M) and Mr K. Srinivasa Rao of the Lok Satta, requested the government to keep the opening of financial bids and awarding of contracts on hold. They were speaking at a meeting on the metro rail project organised by the Citizens for a Better Public Transport. While making it clear that the parties were not against the project, all the leaders were unanimous in their view that the project should be taken up only after conducting a public hearing with the representatives of political parties. They accused the government of rushing through the project without making public the detailed project report, patronisation study report, environment impact assessment report, concessional agreement, list of buildings and property to be demolished, list of stations and the alternative traffic management during the construction of the elevated structure for metro rail. Raising doubt over the impact of the project, Mr Dattatreya said the cost of the project was a little over Rs 4,000 crore when it was approved during his tenure. "Now the cost has escalated to Rs 10,000 crore and by the time it is completed, the cost will cross Rs 1,6000 crore. Who is answerable?" he asked. Mr P.L. Srinivas, the general secretary of the Telugu Desam Greater Hyderabad unit, asked the government to take the citizens and NGOs working into confidence. All documents should be made available to political parties.
