Bokaro, March 14: Buoyed by the overwhelming response to contact programmes and health camps organised for the villagers of Jhumra hills, the CRPF and district administration yesterday convened a medical camp and janta durbar at Rehawan, about 135 kilometres from Bokaro steel city.
Villagers, ignoring the diktat of Maoist rebels who have repeatedly asked them to boycott such government-sponsored functions, attended the camp in thousands.
Hundreds of villagers queued up at the camp from early morning for medical check-ups and medicines, while many senior citizens took the opportunity to put forth their demands for new roads, better educational facilities, employment generation schemes and BPL cards.
Giving each one a patient hearing was Bokaro deputy commissioner Satyendra Singh. He promised to get back to the area within a few weeks to solve the problems plaguing the villagers.
Top police sources revealed that the camp was convened to win more hearts, mainly those living in Rehawan, Pachmo, Khurdag, Jaiyataand, Vihay Mahua, Palmataand, Kailubera, Sayiya paani and Jhumra.
Speaking to The Telegraph, Bokaro SP Saket Singh said the people living in the rural areas of Jhumra were now cooperating with the administration which would help combat the Maoist menace in the zone. The area was known as a safe haven for rebels till very recently.
