At dawn, dappled light filters through the leaves of Humboldt County's National Redwood Park. Stream rises from the 10-mile road, devoid of tourists in the winter months. Less then a mile away, however, mill workers grumble about being laid off. At the turn of the century Humbodlt Country, famous for its redwood forests, mountains and coastal views, has 300 timber mills. Today the count is six and dwindling. Four major plants have closed since last year : Blue Lake Forest Products closed this July.
