Growth of reed in gravel in the form of wetlands or in the hydrophonic state provides us eco friendly modes which use 'nature to protect nature' as the reed plants with an extensive network of rhizomes and the naturally occuring bacteria associated with their root structure help in breaking down of organic solids present in the waste water. The wetland mode has been successfully used for treatment of municipal sewage in many towns in Germany.
