Thousands of trees are being felled in the forests of Pathri Range on the outskirts of Rajaji national Park to make space for an ambitious programme to "rehabilitate" the Van Gujjars who occupy the elephant corridor during the winter months. The felling operation began quietly last year under orders from the Union Ministry of Environment and forests to a community of pastoral nomads who have so far refused to leave the forests.
