The Madhya Pradesh government has taken a number of steps for improving the condition of farmers and for encouraging them towards agriculture works. In this direction the government has reduced the tariff of power for the year 2008-09. The Madhya Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission has decided to provide power to the farmers for this year at 30 paise per unit. The Commission's decision is welcome. The State government was already providing the farmers, having power meters, at subsidised rate of 75 paise per unit. By giving further relief, the Commission has fixed this minimum rate for them. The new tariff finds place, as an incentive, in the latest rates released recently. Fifteen paise rebate will be given on installing ISI mark motors and another 30 paise on use of friction-free PVC pipe and foot valve, besides shunt capacitor of proper rating. This benefit would be availed by farmers having meters and under tariff list L-B. Though the decision of the Commission is welcome but the benefit of this relief should be availed by maximum number of farmers as there are some conditions too. It may be noted that the experts have been voicing concern over raw deal being meted out to the farmers. Farming is now proving to be a costly proposition. Due to scanty rainfall the farmers have suffered much loss. In a similar manner, the government should look into the other needs of the farmers like fertilizer, improved seeds and better equipment. Looking to the plight of the farming community, the Union government had recently waived off their loans also. The farmers, on their part need to do their work well, and help in the creation of a buffer stock of foodgrains and other farm produce.
