Relief measures in full swing: Dhumal

HIT BY CALAMITY: Debris of a house that collapsed due to heavy rain in Shimla on Saturday. Rescue work to unearth bodies is on. SHIMLA: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, while reviewing the situation that has risen after massive rains and landslides here on Sunday, confirmed that there have been 41 deaths in the State in the past two days. He said the Shimla district was the worst affected with 33 causalities including the six deaths in the town. He claimed the relief measures and rescue work are being taken on war footing in all affected areas. The State Horticulture Minister Narender Bragta has been sent to take stock of the situation to Rohru, Jubbal-Kotkhai and Chopal areas where maximum deaths have occurred . Mr. Dhumal said the water level of various rivers is also flowing above the danger mark at certain places and residents have been evacuated from both the banks of river Sutlej. He said the Forest Department has approached the High Court for permission to remove some trees in Shimla town to save lives. The High Court has also banned felling of trees in the State for some time now. At least three people have died because of uprooting of trees and property worth crores has been damaged in the town on Saturday. Missing Karmapa traced The Chief Minister said an Indian Air Force helicopter had successfully dropped essential supplies of medicines, food stuff and blankets at Bharatgarh, area near Sarchu border to Leh, where some people had been stranded. He also said the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje Karmapa and his team had been reported to be safe and sent towards Leh from Bharatgarh beyond Baralacha pass while rescue teams had already been rushed to rescue the remaining stranded people in that area. He said that Border Roads Organization (BRO) had started snow clearance of Manali-Keylong-Baralacha-Sarchu highway and assured to clear the road a quickly as possible. He added that civil authorities were in constant contact with BRO authorities for clearance of all BRO roads passing through the State. The Karmapa was on his way to Leh when due to heavy snowfall in the region he was reported missing on Friday. The local administration and Tibetan Government in Exile were tight lipped regarding the incident and did not make any statement until Sunday when he was traced and was reported to be safe.
