Hurdles cropping up one by one are hindering the reopening of Kolar Gold mines. Few leaders of the Federation of BGML labour unions have identified loopholes in some conditions in the tender procedures and have submitted a writ petition in the court. It is more than a year since the Union Cabinet decided to reopen the historical Kolar Gold Mines with the participation of Labour Union cooperatives and by floating global tenders. As per the orders of the High Court the estimates of mines property and the conditions of the tender regulations have been prepared by a private company and the same has been submitted to the State High Court. The High Court has granted permission to the labour union federations to submit objections, if any, and consequently labour unions, cooperative societies have expressed extensive objections. As a result more than 16 weeks of time period has been allocated to complete the tender process. Labour unions can submit their objections in this period. Union leader Anbazhagan said that they have pointed out the lapses in the tender regulations including not including the balance of Rs 52 crores to pay under VRS, housing facilities to workers, appeal to give housing to all the 10,000 workers instead of the proposed 3100 etc. Jayakumar of federation of union cooperatives alleged that some labour leaders have protested that few leaders are ready to sell the mines property to foreign companies for personal gains. The workers say that a break up has occurred between Diwakaran and other leaders of the federation of 18 labour unions with regard to the MoU with the Australian company. They say that the property estimation process by a private agency should be cancelled and estimation should be prepared as per law by a high level team of Central undertaking and legal action should be initiated against those who have looted mines
