Pace of reserving forests wanes : Only three states in Petaling Jaya peninsula of Malaysia gazetted permanent forest reserves (PFRs) in 1997, according to the Forestry Department. The department's 1997 annual report said a total of 35,106 ha were gazetted as PFRs with Pahang in the lead (33,972ha), followed by Negri Sembilan (1,045ha) and Malacca (89ha), increasing the total area of PFRs by only 0.8% for the whole year. It said, however, that another 141,886ha were in various stages of approval for gazetting by the Terengganu, Johor, Kedah, and Selangor governments.
