DIBRUGARH, Sept 8: Thousands of people participated in the demonstration organized by the Rohmoria Erosion Resistance Struggle Forum (RERSF) at Dibrugarh today, to protest the failure of the Centre and the State Government to keep their promises made at various times.
The River Brahmaputra has been eroding huge chunks of Rohmoria since the 1950s.
More than two hundred villages and fifty big tea gardens of the area stretching from Bogibeel to Dhola Hatighuli have gone underwater.
The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, visited the area in 2006 and had announced a package of Rs 350 crore.
The Union Water Resources Minister, Dr Saifuddin Soz, was on a visit in 2007 and stated in a meeting that anti-erosion measures would be taken up.
However, there has been little development towards the direction.
The people of Bogibeel, Maijan, Nagaghuli, Oakland , Rohmoria, Guijan, Dighaltarang, Laina, Hatighuli and Bhajani took part in the demonstration.
They submitted a memorandum addressed to the President of India to the district administration seeking her intervention in the matter.
