Karimnagar, July 13: The fisheries department has stocked a total of 56.97 lakh of advanced quality fingerlings of major carp variety at a cost of Rs 17.69 lakhs in the LMD reservoir in the town as part of reservoir fishery development programme to benefit about 1,100 fishermen families. A small quantity of 3.07 lakh fish seed was also stocked in the Upper Manair Dam reservoir in Sircilla division in the current year. However, the department is presently enforcing a two months ban on fishing in the two reservoir in view of the breeding season. The ban will be lifted in August. Fresh water prawn seed worth Rs 28 lakhs was also stocked in the LMD reservoir earlier this year. This is expected to result in a yield of about 50 tonne of prawn worth about Rs 75 lakhs. Meanwhile, the department has embarked on the modernisation of fish markets to provide improved amenities in the fish markets and also ensure hygienic conditions surrounding them. A newly-constructed fish market was already inaugurated in Jagtial recently as part of the scheme. A new fish market is fast coming up at rythu bazaar in Kashmirgadda in Karimnagar. The department has decided to open the new fish market by July-end and sent proposals for establishment of fish markets in Korutla, Metpalli, Sircilla and other towns in view of the growing demand for improvement of facilities and hygienic conditions in the existing markets. In an effort to provide rich exposure to the members of the fishermen societies on effective management of the societies, the department sent about 34 members of the societies to Kolkata in two separate batches earlier this year. Speaking to this newspaper, the deputy director of the fisheries, Ms Kamala said that a training programme in breeding management and aquarium manufacturing for ornamental fishes was organised for the members in collaboration with Mumbai-based Central Institute of Fisheries Education.
