Residents oppose cell phone towers

V NarayanaMurthi | ENS PRESIDENTS of Sathuvachari near here have opposed the erection of mobile phone towers in their vicinity citing possible harmful electromagnetic radiation (EMR). While urging the district administration to ban the setting up of such towers in residential areas, they also demanded that the State government formulate stringent laws to make efficient safety norms and regulations, besides constituting a watchdog body to monitor their functioning on a regular basis. A petition in this regard has been submitted to the Collec tor recently. Quoting a set of published studies on the harmful impact of mobile phone towers in India and other countries, Usha Rajan said while the locality already had two towers within a radius of 100 metre, a third one was being installed despite the opposition from residents.
