Tirunelveli, RESIDENTS of Seliyanallur panchayat under Manoor Panchayat Union are living in a state of fear as the shock waves triggered by the explosives, being used in a private stone quarry functioning in the panchayat area, have been giving them sleepless nights for the past several months. The problem surfaced after a private company was given license to quarry the stones close to few villages in the panchayat. As high-power explosives were exploded simultaneously, more than 100 houses in the villages had developed serious cracks on the walls and roofs. Violating the mining norms, they detonated huge quantity of explosives, triggering artificial tremors for several kilometres around the stone quarry Moreover, the over-dimensional stone pieces were landing in the residential areas at an intense velocity due to the impact of the explosion, claimed the residents.
