Expressing his dismay over the opposition to garbage disposal sites across the State, Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat said a time would come when Goans would have to dispose off their daily garbage within their compounds and verandahs. He favoured that mega housing projects consisting of 25 or more flats should be mandated to make provision for its own garbage disposal on the lines of Mumbai Municipal Corporation. Speaking after inaugurating a garbage awareness programme here on Monday, Kamat regretted that people are just opposing garbage disposal sites for the sake of opposition. Referring to the opposition brewing against Margao Municipal Council's plan to dispose off dry waste at the KTC bus stand to make room for a treatment plant at Sonsodo, Kamat said "When I was the then Urban Development Minister, waste from Sonsodo was dumped for land filling near the SGPDA market. No doubt, there was opposition to the plan, but the dumping had no major adverse damage on the ecology and environment'. He recalled that a House Committee had suggested two garbage disposal sites at Bendurem and Colvale, but the sites were abandoned due to opposition from the local residents. Emphasising the need to educate the people on garbage disposal, the Chief Minister suggested to the Municipal and Panchayat bodies to have their own garbage disposal sites. In his address, Goa Pollution Control Board Member Secretary, L U Joshi said the Central government has sanctioned funds to create awareness on garbage disposal amongst the residents. He also touched upon the sensitive subject of opposition from local groups to garbage disposal sites and reminded the Municipal chairpersons and Chief Officers about a Supreme Court ruling which spoke about imposing fines and imprisonment for failure to implement rules on garbage disposal.
