Karnataka is among the priority areas under a pioneering project to conserve lakes in the country. Implemented by the National River Conservation Directorate , Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF), the National Lake Conservation Plan (NLCP) aims at an integrated approach to restore and protect lakes. The restoration process of these lakes includes interception and diversion of sewage entering into the lakes; Providing Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) for rejuvenation of the water body; desiltation of the lake beds; facilitating restoration of depleting ground water table; creating habitat for aquatic life; and, providing fencing.
