Alipurduar: Forest officials today seized the horn of a rhinoceros and a British metal coin, dating back to 1818, from a smuggler of animal body parts. Rahul Ami was arrested from his house in Pinki Chowpathi. Kalyan Das, the Jalpaiguri divisional forest officer, said the horn may fetch at least Rs 10 lakh in the international market. One month ago, Manosh Acharjee, the officer of Dalgaon range under Jalpaiguri forest division, received information that Rahul had in his possession the horn of a rhino. Manosh and his staff started keeping tabs on him. Acharjee contacted Rahul on the phone three days ago and introduced himself as a person interested in buying the horn. Rahul said he would part with the horn only if he was paid Rs 10 lakh. Rahul today agreed to meet Manosh at a roadside inn in the afternoon and sell the horn. Manosh, along with his colleagues, waited for Rahul at the inn in plainclothes. But, as Rahul did not turn up even after two hours, they, along with Madarihat police, went to Rahul's house, seized the horn and took him into custody. Rahul said he would sell the coin at Rs 50,000. Das said two more persons were involved in the racket and they were from Bihar. Rahul will be produced in court tomorrow.
