Ridley hatchlings emerge from pits

KENDRAPARA: More than two million baby Olive Ridley sea turtles started emerging from pits on the sandy nesting ground of Rushikulya beach recently. This was informed by A.K. Jena, divisional forest officer of Rushikulya turtle rookery. After emerging from the nests the turtle hatchlings have started their journey towards the sea. About 2.60 lakh Olive Ridley turtles had laid eggs in the second week of February on the Rushikulya beach. The female turtles dig nests with their back flippers, deposit about a hundred eggs and cover and conceal the nest before returning to the sea. The eggs incubate in the warm sand and the female turtles never visit their nest again to take care of the eggs or the hatchlings, said the forest officer. The turtles lay 120-150 eggs at one go. They arrive at the coast at the dead of night and after laying eggs they get back into the deep sea. Hatchlings emerge from the eggs after 45-60 days and find their way to the sea creating a cacophony. It is one nature
