The delay of the endangered Oliver Ridley turtles to reach Gahimatha Beach for mass nesting, and their continued killing has environmentalists worried. Last year the turtles skipped the Gahimatha, a famous rookery, while sporadically laying eggs at certain other sites. This year the turtles were expected in January but failed to turn up.
