Alleging widespread human rights violations by the security forces as well as state-backed Salwa Judum movement in Chhattisgarh, a leading international human rights organisation has urged the Centre and state government to end its support to Salwa Judum. "The Central and Chhattisgarh governments should take all necessary measures to end unlawful Salwa Judum activities, end all government support to Salwa Judum, including the provision of weapons, and end all participation by government security forces in Salwa Judum operations, including raids and reprisals,' the New York-based Human Rights Watch said in its report on rights violations in the conflict between the government forces and Naxalites in Chhattisgarh. The report was compiled after four weeks of groundwork in the Naxalite-hit areas in Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh. It says since the beginning of anti-Naxal operations in 2005, government security forces and Salwa Judum activists have "attacked villages, killed and raped villagers, and burned down huts to force people into government camps'. The report also calls on the Naxalites to "allow camp residents to return to their home villages without reprisals'. The Centre dismissed the report saying India was a thriving democracy which had "adequate institutional mechanisms to ensure that the human rights of its citizens are protected'.
