Efforts of the Union Government to bring more and more area under forest and tree cover notwithstanding, proposals from state governments and union territories to divert forest land for non-forestry use are being cleared expeditiously now than ever before. According to sources in the Forest Ministry, against an average annual clearance of 350 cases of diversion of forest land for general use a few years ago, the number has increased to 920 cases a year now.
