Breach May Check Rising Water Level But Flooding Around Games Village Worries Govt
New Delhi: Early on Monday morning, Hathnikund released the highest amount of water that it has released in the past 100 years. For three hours at a stretch, the barrage saw 7,44,507 cusecs water passing through its gates, more than what was released in 1978 when Delhi witnessed its worst ever floods. However, government officials say that this time, even though the quantity of water is much more than what was released in 1978, the level of Yamuna is not likely to cross the 207m mark and instead settle around 206.95m. The river had reached a level of 205.75m at 7pm on Monday and is expected to peak around Tuesday morning.
The levels may also stabilize somewhat on Tuesday since another breach developed in the embankment at Pathargarh near Panipat on Monday evening, at the same place where it had developed in the second week of September. Sources said that the repairs carried out then had only been temporary and could not withstand the huge pressure of water.
According to Central Water Commission (CWC) officials, the river peaked in Kalanaur around 11am on Monday after reaching a level of 267.63m. By Monday afternoon, the water had reached Mawi and Baghpat and was showing a steady rise.
