It is gratifying that Mr Suresh Prabhu, chairman of the Task Force on Interlinking of Rivers, should be concerned about what the plan to link up the major rivers of the country will do to a State like Assam. During an interaction with editors of some Guwahati-based newspapers, Mr Suresh, who holds the status of a Union Cabinet minister, said that though the National Water Development Board (NWDB) had been carrying out studies on river interlinking for more than 20 years, the Union Government was interested in a separate study by IIT, Guwahati to look at the interlinking of rivers from Assam's point of view.
