The proposed linking of the Himalayan and the peninsular rivers, at an estimated cost of Rs 5,60,000, has been drawing flak from different quarters. Opposition parties, some neighbouring countries and, of course, certain environmental NGOs (who become active whenever any water resources project is taken up), do not seem ready to give the positive aspect of the project a chance. Among various other factors, these groups have been questioning the economic viability, ecological balance and the long gestation period of the project. But the pioneers of the project question this attitude.
