Alleging corruption in maintenance work of dams in the state, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) on Sunday demanded a judicial probe in to breaking of Algin-Charsadi dam leading to hundreds of villages being flooded in Gonda and Barabanki districts.
RLD state president Ram Asrey Verma accusing state administration for playing with the lives of people said, only due to poor quality of maintenance work Algin-Charsadi dam in Gonda was broken on Saturday which caused flash floods in more than two hundred villages of Gonda and Barabanki.
The people of these villages in large numbers are missing, crops has been completely ruined and several persons are feared to be dead. Following instructions from Chief Minister, the administration has started relief work for alternative rehabilitation of the flood victims but seeing the enormity of the crisis it was proving quite insufficient, he said.
Demanding a judicial probe in to breaking of the dam,Verma said, the people residing in the villages adjacent to the dam for past few months were complaining of poor quality of construction and maintenance work at the dam but administrative officials unheeded the complaints.
Stressing that a case under criminal sections should be lodged against the government officials responsible for maintenance work at the Algin-Charsadi dam, he said, this situation causing loss of lives and property in Gonda and Barabanki districts could be averted if local administration had taken complaints by the villagers seriously.
Pointing out at government's apathy, RLD leader said, the opposition parties had already forewarned the government about danger of floods in several areas but no preventive measures were taken in this direction.
