Rs 112 cr for tsunami rehab in Nagercoil

More than three years after the devastating tsunami hit the Tamil Nadu coast, rehabilitation measures are still underway. District Collector Jyothi Nirmala announced Rs 112 crore as extension of revolving funds and loans for self-help groups (SHGs), industrial and entrepreneur training, upgrading basic amenities in tsunami-affected areas and construction of permanent shelters for the affected. Briefing the press, she has said while 1,205 permanent shelters are being constructed under the Rajiv Gandhi Rehabilitation package at a cost of Rs 28.67 crore, reconstruction of 1,238 damaged houses have also been taken up. Houses built under the government schemes and those, which are more than ten years old, would be replaced under the scheme, she added. Noting that 3,496 SHGs in the district were extended Rs 9.38 crore as revolving funds, she said 165 SHGs availed of bank loans to the tune of Rs 1.80 crore for starting self-sustaining entrepreneur activities. Aid to the tune of Rs 4.28 crore was given to 4,286 physically challenged persons and 3,402 SHGs were rendered vocational training at an expenditure of Rs 5.94 crore, she said. Computer training and health assistant training were imparted to the tsunami-affected people at a cost of Rs 5.75 lakh and Rs 6.75 lakh respectively. Stating that these works have been implemented through the District Tsunmai Implementation Unit, she added that under the Emergency Tsunami Rehabilitation Project 1,190 permanent shelters are being built at a cost of Rs 28.32 crore. While noting that under the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalachi Thittam, 40 villages benefited in the dis trict, she said.
