The National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) is to be implemented at a cost of nearly Rs 151 crore in West Godavari district from April. The district administration has worked out an action plan to implement the scheme. Already 3.89 lakh workers were registered under the scheme. Works like water conservation, raising plants, minor irrigation works, desiltation of canals and tanks, land development, flood control and protection works and drainage works will be taken up under the scheme. Taking part in a review meet with officials, the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) project director and NREGS additional co-ordinator, Mr Ch. Penchal Reddy, said here on Wednesday that as per the scheme, a person in a household should be given 100 days of work in a year and added that Rs 80 would be given as wages for seven hours of work per day. He said that if the labourer worked for longer hours, he would be able to make more money for the day. He directed revenue authorities to make arrangements for payment to workers every 15 days through village committees and added that for labourers who survive on a day-to-day basis, arrangements should be made for payment once a week.
