A total cost of Rs 1,72,000 crore has been estimated for the expansion of the national highways development project (NHDP). The draft report on roads prepared by the Planning Commission received the approval of the Prime Minister's trade and industry advisory council (comprising representatives from the industry) recently. The council also came up with a list of suggestions for the commission to consider. The ideas mooted by the council include revamping and restructuring of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) into a multi-disciplinary entity, addressing problems related to octroi, amending Corruption Act of 1988, reserving 5% of forex reserve for all infrastructure projects and putting in place quarterly monitoring of projects to check cost and time over-run.
