The public interest litigation for banning all timber based activities in the seven north-eastern states has caused a loss of about Rs 1,480 crore to the national exchequer. The decaying timber lying in the forest for more than a year is also poisoning the soil which may escalate into an epidemic form for other natural habitat it is feared.
