Rs 2 crore to develop horticulture in Ongole

The authorities were spending Rs 2 crore for the development of horticulture in Prakasam district, said Mr M. Venkateswarlu, additional director of horticulture, here on Sunday. Speaking to this newspaper, he said that they were also operating a horticultural training institute at the district headquarters to give the latest technology of cultivation to farmers. The aut-horities were raising sweet lemon in over 1,450 hecta-re, mango in over 300 hect-are and jasmine in over 60 hectare of the district, he said. The officials are giving 75 per cent subsidy to horticulture crops, he added. Recently, the horticulture department had selected 1,700 hectare in the district for an agricultural renovation scheme, under which 1,000 hectares of sweet le-mon and 700 hectares of mango would be develop-ed, he added. Under the agricultural mechanisation scheme, 1,072 Taiwan sprayers and smart tillers worth Rs 75 lakh were supplied to horticulture farmers at 50 per cent subsidy, the AD stated. Under the total pesticides maintenance scheme, they had supplied bio fertilisers to curb bugs, he said. Besi-des Prakasam district, hort-icultural farmers from adjacent Guntur and Nellore districts were also acquiring skill-based training in horticulture harvesting at the institute here, he said.
