The municipal administration directorate commissioner and senior IAS officer, Mr Sunil Sharma, said that state government had allocated Rs 350 crore for taking up sanitation works in all mun-icipalities across the state. Talking to newsmen at the local municipal office here on Monday, he said that state government sanctioned funds to the tune of Rs 150 crore under the first phase to take up sanitation works in all municipalities in the state, under a particular scheme. Badwel municipality also got Rs 34 lakh under the scheme, he added. Mr Sunil Sharma said that preference was being given to provide basic amenities in all municipalities in the state. Special focus was being laid to mitigate the drinking water shortage in all municipalities in the ensuing summer, he added. State government is monitoring the situation in all municipalities and as part of the programme, Badwel municipality had also come under the scanner. The funds are being extended with the assistance from the Centre, he said, adding that the respective municipal commissioners had the responsibility to ensure proper sanitation with the sanctioned funds. Problems faced by people in the newly set up municipalities were being reviewed and at the same time, state government was keeping a close watch on the working of various municipalities, Mr Sunil Sharma said. He reminded that Rs 2 crore had already been sanctioned to take up development works under Badwel municipality and tenders were called for to take them up; some works had already been taken up. He expressed satisfaction over the implementation of works. Mr Sunil Sharma assured more funds for Badwel. An action plan was chalked out to solve the drinking water problem in Badwel municipality, he said. Though a temporary solution was worked out now, a permanent solution to mitigate the problem was also on the cards, he added. He advised municipal authorities to evolve a strategy to sell garbage and earn money for the municipal exchequer. Vijayawada and Suryapet municipalities were in the forefront of selling garbage. In Badwel too, a suitable site was identified to store garbage, to be sold at a later date. Later, Mr Sunil Sharma reviewed development works, drinking water issue, provision of basic amenities and other such issues with municipal officials. Municipal commissioner Chandra Prakash, municipal engineer Gurivi Reddy, town planning officer Muni Chandrasekhar and other municipal officials participated in the review meet.
