To give a much needed fillip to the domestic tourism business, the Centre is planning to spend about Rs 500 crore for developing infrastructure in 20 tourist spots in the country. "We have already identified the locations where we will provide world class infrastructure facilities to boost tourism,' said minister for tourism and culture, Ambika Soni. The Centre will provide Rs 25 crore for each destination and Rs 50 crore for a circuit that includes three tourist sites, the minister said while addressing the Great Indian Travel Bazaar '08, jointly organised by Ficci and the Rajasthan government and Union Tourism Ministry. These chosen tourist destinations would get facilities such as budget hotels, rail and air connectivity, roads and tourist information centres. The projects would take about 2-3 years time to be completed. Most of these locations would be those already recognised as World Heritage sites, a Tourism Ministry official told FE . Some tourist spots such as Ajmer, Agra, Bodh Gaya, Dwarka, Hampi and Badami, Varanasi have already been shortlisted and the ministry has written to state governments to forward more names. The Centre has also begun development of Bodh Gaya for which it has already provided Rs 19 crore, the official said. Another 20 destinations would be taken up depending on how well these come up. "The main rationale behind developing these areas is to encourage repeat tourism where foreign tourists would like to come time and again,' Soni said. About 5 million foreign tourists visited India last year and the ministry hopes to increase this number to 10 million by 2010 when the country will host the Commonwealth Games.
