Heavy rains during the past few days created havoc in 10 districts causing immense hardships to people in the area. As a result of this natural calamity, eight persons have died and six injured, two each from Bibile and Passara. One death was reported from Haputale and three from Divulapitiya while three injuries were reported from Badulla and Divulapitiya respectively. Presently, 91,194 families comprising 381,460 persons have been affected, said Minister Rishad Bathiudeen. He said the Ministry is providing relief and is continuously monitoring the situation. He further indicated that he has allocated a sum of Rs. 7.1 million to the respective District Secretaries for provision of relief to those persons presently affected. The Minister of Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services said according to the data available, 43,846 families comprising 198,218 persons in the Ampara District, 385 families comprising 1,622 persons in the Badulla District, 33,465 families comprising 130,614 in the Batticaloa District, 2,036 families comprising 7,781 persons in the Gampaha District, 72 families comprising 301 persons in the Jaffna District, 11,033 families comprising 41,320 persons in the Mannar District, 27 families comprising 135 persons in the Moneragala District, 92 families comprising 382 persons in the Puttalam District, 26 families comprising 92 persons in the Ratnapura District and 212 families comprising 995 persons in the Trincomalee District have been identified for provision of immediate relief. He said as an immediate measure, six welfare centres have already been established in Hali-ela, Eravur Town and in Manmunai South to accommodate the flood victims. It is estimated that already 1,870 families have moved into these centres. Heavy showers have caused severe damages to property. Reports reaching this Ministry reveal that in the Badulla District 14 houses, Batticaloa District 187 houses, Moneragala District 19 houses and in the Ratnapura District 8 houses, bringing a total of 228 houses to be totally damaged. The number of partially damaged houses is 637. Badulla district 139 houses, Batticaloa District 410 houses, Jaffna District 72 houses. Moneragala District 7 houses, Ratnapura District 9 houses have been partially damaged. Minister Bathiudeen added that the following allocation have been granted to meet the present contingency in providing immediate relief services to the victims. Ampara District Secretary: Rs. 650,000, Badulla District Secretary: Rs. 1,102,500, Batticaloa District Secretary: Rs. 837,692, Gampaha District Secretary: Rs. 300,000, Moneragala District Secretary Rs. 1,170,950, Puttalam District Secretary: Rs. 84,610, Mannar District Secretary: Rs. 2,000,000, Ratnapura District Secretary: Rs. 976,000, Trincomalee District Secretary: Rs. 11,287.
