Rs 950 lakhs spent to procure machinery

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has procured machinery worth Rs 950 lakhs to cope up with situations arising out of natural or man-made disasters. The purchase was made after the committee, headed by MCD commissioner, suggested that the procurement of the machinery is necessary to deal with disaster management. The committee also comprised of other senior member of the MCD, including engineering-in-chief, all chief engineers and director vigilance. According to the MCD officials, experts from Central Building Research Institute, Indian Institute of Technology and other departments were consulted in the matter. The Delhi government has given the grant to acquire machinery. "The Delhi government has assigned the MCD with the work of debris removal and cleaning of roads in case of any mishaps. So, we had put a request to the government to give us sufficient funds for the purchase of necessary equipments like bull dozers, excavators-cumloaders, and trailers, etc. Another purchase of similar equipments is also under process," he said. Recently, nine people were killed in Brahmpuri area of trans-Yamuna and two labourers succumbed to death in sector-16 Rohini, after being trapped under the debris of an under-con struction building. The civic body has made three disaster management centres in the city - Raghubir Nagar, Okhla Industrial Phase-II and Shastri Park. The construction work of disaster management centres are still under process. The disaster management has topped the priority list in the wake of the recent death of labourers due to negligence at the construction sites.
