Since urbanisation of Assam is one of the least in India with only 14.5 per cent of its population living in urban areas of the State, the improvement of road infrastructure chiefly means the improvement of village connectivity. However, the State in this respect presents a dismal picture. The 63rd session of the Indian Roads Congress which was hosted by Assam from January 3 to 6, 2003 at Guwahati has once again reminded us the dire need for immediate steps to be taken to improve the State's rural connectivity in order that some meaningful attempt is made towards its infrastructural development...editorial
