Rural development via Rs 600-cr cut

The BJP-led coalition which promised to concentrate on the development of rural India has decided to cut the budgetary alloction of the ministry of rural areas and employment for 1998-99 by Rs 600 crore, And has proposed a Rs 400 crore reduction in the budgetary allocation for 1999-2000. Sources said, the finance ministry informed the ministry that it was forced to cut back on funds to ensure fiscal discipline. The cut back will hit various schemes such as drinking water supply scheme and employment assistance scheme the hardest.
