SAARC model village at Mahavilawatta

The Government has made arrangements to establish a fully-fledged SAARC Village at Mahavilawatta estate, Ulapane in the Nawalapitiya electorate to mark the 15th SAARC Summit scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka in July this year. As the initial stage, 100 houses will be constructed within this SAARC village by depicting the theme and the identities of the SAARC movement. Steps will be taken to hand over these houses from among middle class families who do not have any permanent shelter, Power Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage told the Daily News yesterday. On the directive of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the set target of the Government is to construct 900 houses in this SAARC village within a 100 acre land plot in the Mahavilawatta Estate. Under the first stage, 100 houses will be constructed in this SAARC village, the Minister said. The intention of the Government is to establish this SAARC village as a fully-fledged model village complete with all facilities including electricity, water, road network and a community centre. The construction work on these hundred houses are expected to be completed before July. All construction work of the SAARC village will be carried out by the National Housing Development Authority. The construction work on this SAARC village will ceremonially commence under the patronage of Minister Aluthgamage on March 22. According to the Minister, a sum of Rs.20 million has already been allocated to construct these houses while another Rs.40 million has been reserved to develop the infrastructure facilities of the village. Minister Aluthgamage said the Government will allocate a 15 perch land to each household in the SAARC village. Each household will also be given the necessary facilities and provided the know-how to prepare a home garden within each land premises.
