The state government which has initiated the modernisation of Nagarjunasagar Project main canals wants to extend water to every acre of the ayacut by taking up repairs to the minor and sub-minor canals too. The government decided to involve the water bodies such as water user associations and distributor committees for the repair works. A total of 72 water user associations and 12 distributory committees are under Tekulapalli circle in Khammam and Krishna districts and these bodies should complete the repair works of the canals before kharif. The government sanctioned Rs 4.30 crore for canal repairs in these two districts and another Rs 2 crore was allocated by the revenue department from the water cess pool collected from the farmers. These water bodies should complete the repairs of the minor canals and distributories. The minor canals have been neglected by the government since long and the water bodies that were formed to look after the channels were keeping idle by not sanctioning any funds for them. The works, identified by the engineers, like removing bushes, replacement of locks, strengthening bunds and sluices and desilting were included in the repair works. The chairpersons of water user associations and distributory committees were asked to look after the works and complete them with top quality in two months. The government has already commenced modernisation of the main canals. But, the modernisation would not be of use in extending water to every inch of the tail-end ayacut without completing the repairs. AP Rythu Sangham president, Mr S. Rama Rao said, "The government delayed releasing funds and it is difficult for the water bodies to complete the work.'
