Lakhs of diseased sal trees, felled after many bureaucratic and legal hurdles, are lying in Madhya Pradesh forests, threatening another epidemic. The Government has been unable to provide enough labourers or requisition enough number of trucks to take the logs out of the forests. The Forest Department officials are worried because if these trees are not removed before the monsoon, the sal borer insect may multiply once again and attack healthy trees. One insect lays 300 to 400 eggs at a time. They multiply in damp weather.
